Leyland Warriors U14 team in action against Woolston

A LEYLAND rugby league club is celebrating after its Open Age team progressed from their group of the pre-season War of the Rose competition, winning 12-10 against Rochdale Cobras.

Russ MacFarlane opened the scoring for the Warriors, with Scott Low adding the extras, before Rochdale took a 10-6 lead at the interval.

The Warriors worked steadily to take control of the second half of the game, building momentum for Low to score and convert Leyland’s second try. Despite increased pressure from Rochdale, the Warriors booked their place in a tie in Widnes against West Bank.

Meanwhile, the Under-14 team beat Woolston Rovers 10-0, Cory Bennie and Jamie Anderson crossing for tries.

The tackling from the whole team was excellent, but Adam Watkinson led the way.

An under-strength Warriors’ Under-13 side lost to Cadishead Rhinos 26-14.

Both sides started brightly but Cadishead raced into a 10-0 lead midway through the first half. Then, with half-time approaching, hooker Callum Young spread the ball for Joe Kirkby to score in the corner.

In the second period, Cadishead added three quickfire tries, before Warriors grabbed two consolation scores.

Elsewhere, the Warriors Under-8 side lost 24-12, despite a fine hat-trick of tries by Matthew Quinn, while Fletcher Turner and Daniel Almond were on the scoresheet for the Under-11s in a disappointing 22-10 defeat to Folly Lane.
