Packed and ready: Luis Reece is ready for the challenge

Leyland cricketer Luis Reece has secured a contract with new county champions Lancashire.

The 20-year-old allrounder, who scored more than 1,000 runs last season for Leyland, has signed a scholarship deal with the Old Trafford side.

It means that once the youngster has completed his studies at university he’ll be released to play with Lancashire and registered to play first-team cricket if his performances merit it.

He said: “It’s something I have wanted since I was a little kid.

“I am very pleased that I have a foot in the door with the county I have grown up in.

“The deal is very flexible, enabling me to continue playing for all the teams I played with this year.”

As well as his university side and Leyland, Reece also played for Unicorns in 2011, which is made up of up-and-coming players and former professionals trying to land a new contract.

He added: “It’s (the deal) is not fixed as such so if something more concrete occurs I am able to be released from this current deal.”

The left-handed batsman is due to train six times a week with Leeds Bradford University, although he’s been hit by a nasty injury.

“I will start back training after ripping a tendon in my neck from a car crash I had few weeks ago,” he said.

“I will train with Lancashire when I am free, as it fits around my university schedule.

“My target is to do well in my first class games for uni, then in the Unicorns matches and with Lancashire, hopefully pushing for a first team spot.

“Hopefully I’ll be able to carry off where I left off last year.”

Reece, who lives in Clayton-le-Woods, said he was determined to bring more silverware at Fox Lane, Leyland, in 2012.

He said: “Leyland is a fantastic club with both great players and aspirations.

“The first XI fell short this year but we are training hard to retrieve what was ours last year - the league title.”
