Rangers fail to turn pressure into points
Adlington Rangers 10 Walney Central 16
Rangers started well with the pack led by Paul Cookson making strong breaks.
The ball was being moved quickly through the backs, but Walney defended well and made a few attacks of their own.
Then after another good run by Mike Ferney, the ball went out to Carl Parker, who dummied and then handed on to the supporting Paul Cookson who scored - Richard Wareing adding the conversion.
Rangers were now doing a lot of attacking and after another quick passing movement, full-back Paul Dootson joined the line and squeezed in at the corner.
Wareing's attempted conversion kick bounced agonisingly off the upright.
Minutes later, a dropped pass allowed Walney to break out for a try and add the goal.
Rangers should have pressed home their advantage, but fell back into one man rugby.
Twice they had overlaps, but failed to pass out and were tackled so the chance was lost.
In the second half, both teams were defending well and for long periods Walney were camped on Rangers' line, but could not break through.
Ryan Fitton saved a certain try when he held up a Walney player on the line.
Rangers kept plugging away, but seemed to lose their way when in Walney's 25.
With five minutes to go, they fell for the sucker punch - a dropped ball saw Walney race down the length of the field to score.
With seconds left on the clock, they forced their way over again to finish the game 10-16 and take the points.
Adlington A played away at New Springs Lions, but were let down when some players failed to turn up.
They played with just eleven men and this meant that they were chasing the game from the start.
In one of their rare attacks, Simon Hurst scored Rangers' only try and Martin Hill kicked the goal.
New Springs were easy winners with a final score of 50-6.
