Straight from Manchester Opera House to Blackpool’s Grand, a musical classic arrives next week, while this weekend epic operas offer the splendour of ancient Egypt and the hanging gardens of Babylon

Only weeks after it wowed audiences in Manchester, the revival of the musical SevenBrides for Seven Brothers comes to Blackpool Grand Theatre next week.

Directed and choreographed by award winning American theatre maker Patti Colombo the dance sequences alone are worth the price of admission.

This musical also features 16 showstoppers including Bless Your Beautiful Hide, Sobbin’ Women, Love Never Goes Away, Wonderful Day, Goin’ Courtin’ and Glad That You Were Born.

Set in Oregon in 1850, it’s the story of Adam (Sam Attwater – Dancing on Ice champion, Hollyoaks, EastEnders), the eldest of seven brothers, who goes to town to get a wife.

He convinces Milly (Helena Blackman – How Do You Solve A Problem Like Maria?, Gypsy, The Wizard of Oz) to marry him that same day.

Only then does she discover he has six brothers — all living in his cabin and anxious to get wives of their own.

The show runs from Monday to Saturday. Box Office: 01253 74 33 39 or www.blackpoolgrand.co.uk

Meanwhile, Epic operas Aida and Nabucco come to life at the theatre this Saturday and Sunday nights.

Opera producer Ellen Kent’s staging includes pyrotechnic displays and lighting effects to depict the splendour of ancient Egypt and the hanging gardens of Babylon.

The performances by Chisinau National Opera and Philharmonic Orchestra, with international guest soloists, also include temple dancers, cages of exotic birds and parrots, ballet sequences, a bathing scene and the ceremonial march with a pyrotechnic display.

Another 40 local dancers, children and adults, join the 80-strong cast on stage as slaves and soldiers.
