Natalie Banks is tempted to go for the beer battered fish at The Bobbin Mill

Some might say I’m a bit of a fuss pot when it comes to being in a routine.

Others may think I have OCD.

But, for me everything has its right time and its right place. Take for example fish and chips.

There is only one day of the week that I find myself able to indulge in a battered fish - ‘chippy Friday’ of course.

The tea time visit to the local chip shop has long been a tradition in the Banks-Dickinson household, but the menu at the Bobbin Mill, in Buckshaw Village, was enough to throw all my plans out the window.

It was freezing when I arrived (on a Wednesday!) and took up my seat with my very own ‘Gossip Girls’ Rachel and Nicola.

The main item on the agenda for our long-overdue catch-up was of course to dish as much dirt as we could in the two or so hours we had, but first our attention was drawn to much more pressing matters - food!

The menu ranged from starters to light bites, delicious dishes for sharing, hotpots, burgers and fresh rotisserie chicken.

I managed to narrow it down to the classic beef burger (£6.95), sirloin steak (£10.45) or the chicken tikka masala (£7.95).

It was a real mixed bag of choices, but I was so hungry that I could have eaten a horse (not literally!)

In the end, however, it was the beer battered fish and chips (£7.45) that really caught my eye.

Described in the menu as a fish fillet, battered in-house by their chef in Marston’s beer batter and deep-fried until golden and crispy, it sounded just too good to miss.

But, I had a dilemma. It was only Wednesday... could I really do the unthinkable and have fish and chips mid-week?

I decided to take the plunge and go for it and boy was I not disappointed.

The large plate with my fish and chips arrived first - ahead of Nicola’s golden breaded scampi (£6.95) and Rachel’s gammon steak (£7.25) - which she had told us she couldn’t possibly order after still being stuffed from lunch but proceeded to do so anyway.

The fish was cooked to perfection and slipped from my fork as I tucked in.

The batter was also delicious and finished off the dish brilliantly. Even the chips, which couldn’t possibly live up to real chip shop chips, could they? Did so, and every single one was polished off my plate.

The girls, who had suggested the Bobbin Mill, were also delighted with their choices.

Our only disappointment was that the servings were so big for our main meals that we didn’t have room for desserts!

We knew we should have gone for the light bite option as it was such a shame to miss the melt in the middle chocolate pudding (£3.50).

On their website, the Bobbin promise a perfect place to enjoy food and drink with family and friends and that’s exactly what we got.

It’s a great place to take children, have a cosy night for two or arrange to meet friends for a good chin-wag.

There is no pressure to order, no rush to finish and the staff are incredibly friendly.

The menu also has something for everyone and will cater for all tastes and budgets.
