A major expansion plan is underway as a Leyland pizza factory looks to step up production.
Bosses at Dr Oetker, the new owners of the former Schwan's factory in Marathon Place, has unveiled plans to create 40 new jobs and build a new section to the factory.
They are in talks with the 330-strong workforce about moving to a seven-day working week and have said there is room for further jobs being created as the firm looks to create its own UK manufacturing facility.
Dr Oetker managing director for frozen and chilled food Peter Franks said the takeover of Schwan's Consumer Brands in December last year was a major investment for the German- based food giant.
"Manufacturing is important to us but we are making our products outside the UK and we are committed to having a UK production base for all our businesses. This is the first step on that journey. We are committed to Leyland, it is an important part of what we are manufacturing and the future is bright, no question."
Operations director Brian Harrison said the firm was looking to bring in a successful product line from its takeaway manufacturing facility in Germany to Leyland 'as quickly as possible'.
