A Leyland post office is set to be transformed into a new main-style open-plan branch with longer opening hours.

The Post Office on Church Road is the second in Leyland to be chosen for a revamp, which will give customers an extra five hours of service on Saturday afternoons.

Councillor for the Leyland St Mary’s ward, Phil Hamman, said: “This is excellent news for Leyland.

“The extended hours and the addition of a car tax renewal service is most welcome.

“The Bent Lane Post Office was closed a number of years ago, so this investment in Church Road gives residents reassurance that this branch is here to stay.”

His fellow councillor, Alan Ogilvie, added: “This improvement to one of our Post Offices is extremely good news, not just for the local residents, but for the wider Leyland community. It is a popular establishment that I often use myself, as it is in a convenient location.

“The extended opening hours on a Saturday are very welcome and will offer the opportunity to a greater number of residents at the weekend.

“I wish it every success and look forward to seeing the results of the refurbishment.”

Plans are also in the pipeline to achieve something similar in Hough Lane.

The Post Office wants to relocate the branch from its current position on the high street to the vacant Hyde’s toy shop across the road.

The results of a public consultation are currently being considered, and if the move goes ahead, it means the town centre Post Office could be bigger, and also become an open-plan branch.

The Leyland South Post Office on Church Road will close for refurbishment from February 25, and will re-open on March 6.
