A proposal to offer business rate discounts to small firms in South Ribble has now been voted through by the council.

As previously reported in the Guardian, South Ribble Council’s cabinet suggested a discount of £1,000 for shops, pubs and restaurants with a rateable value of £50,000 or less, to be in place for the next two financial years.

The move was welcomed by the Leyland Town Team when it was announced, with members saying the initiative would be a huge boost to local traders.

The scheme was passed last week, and also means that potential ratepayers will also be offered a 50 per cent reduction if they take up a retail space that has been empty for longer than a year.

And ratepayers receiving Small Business Rate Relief that take on an additional property, which would previously have disqualified them from receiving relief, will continue to receive their existing relief for 12 months.
