A Chorley councillor has been charged with assault by police.

Lancashire Police confirmed that Stephen Murfitt, 56, of Pear Tree Road, Clayton-le-Woods, was charged with Section 47 assault occasioning actual bodily harm and Section 39 assault by beating.

He has been bailed to appear at Chorley Magistrates’ Court on May 4.

The councillor was elected for Labour in the Clayton-le-Woods North ward.

However, a Labour spokesperson said: “Steve Murfitt has been suspended from the Labour Party.”
