Guardian reader Ian Grundy has kindly sent in this delightful photograph of youngsters Maypole dancing in
Wheelton.

The picture was taken in the 1970s outside Wheelton Clock Tower.

The 70-year-old, of Wheelton, said: “The girls and some boys were members of Wheelton Country Dancing Club.

“They used the village hall and were taught country and traditional dancing by Pat Bolton, who still lives in the area, and Ellen Grundy.

“They would probably be doing the Maypole dance around the May Bank Holiday time.

“The lads in the club would be dressed as clowns and would go around collecting for charity.

“After this appearance, the dance would be repeated at one or more of the garden parties held in the area.

“They would also dance at field days and village fetes etc.

“Many of the girls still live locally, and my son and daughter were involved too.”
