A family has been left distraught after burglars broke into their Leyland home and stole a safe containing several thousand pounds of valuable jewellery.

The break-in happened at a detached bungalow in Church Lane, Farington Moss.

Police believe the raiders forced open the back patio doors to get into the property while the homeowners were out.

The incident happened between 1pm and 7.30pm on Thursday.

The offenders searched through the home and taken a safe as well as several items of jewellery.

Police are appealing for anyone who is offered any of the stolen objects for sale to contact police.

Among the items taken is a three tier diamond necklace and earrings, a 9ct gold bracelet with two half sovereigns attached and a seven diamond ring set in a gold oblong.

Det Sgt Jon Cass of Leyland CID said: “We would appeal for anyone who has been offered the jewellery to contact us.”
