Landlords at one of Leyland’s newest pubs say they have been delighted with their first year in charge.
It is more than one year since the long-awaited Wetherspoons moved on to the former Spar on Hough Lane, and now Mark Batty and his wife Caroline say the Leyland Lion is doing a roaring trade.
He said: “We have been a bit surprised by our success so far.
“Things are going better than we expected and it has been a very busy year.
“We have a mixture of different clientele, ranging from 18 right up to 80, and is very varied.
“It is nice for us to see lots of local people and we think we are bringing them into Leyland.
“We get lots of students from Runshaw College and other areas coming in through the doors.
“Another positive is we have got more than 35 members of staff and most of them are coming from the local area.
“I am from Penwortham and I have been happy with it, and Leyland seems like a nicer town than I expected.”
The business celebrated their anniversary by holding a summer beach party event and the owners are hoping for many more happy years at the helm.
Mark added: “We are not just a pub because we manage to run events for our publicans.
“We have organised various trips out, including one to a brewery where we booked a 53-seater bus.
“We also took some people to Prague to sample some of the world’s finest drinks.
“The pub is performing well in terms of trading and takings so we just hope that we can keep that going.”
