Exciting plans for an outdoor gym in Farington Park are in the pipeline.
It is hoped the scheme can go ahead with the help of around £10,000 lottery funding.
Farington Parish Council are working on the project in conjunction with South Ribble Borough Council and South Ribble Partnership.
Councillor Paul Wharton, the lead councillor at South Ribble Borough Council championing the idea, said: “Farington Park is an asset in our community, and an outdoor gym will add a huge benefit to the park whilst also driving forward the active healthy lifestyle the council promotes. This comes as a huge boost to residents in Farington and South Ribble at a time when other councils are tightening their belts and finding themselves struggling to provide the basics.
“The idea of the outdoor gym is that when people are jogging or walking you can hop on and have some exercise. It gets boring when you just stick to your routine.
“We hope that when in place people will vary their routine and use the free equipment provided. The outdoor gym will cater for all members of the community and will have equipment tailored to all ages.”
Farington parish Council chairman Mike Otter said: “It’s an idea I’ve had for about 18 months or so, that the park would lend itself to some kind of outdoor gym equipment.”
He said talks had already taken place with officers from South Ribble Council and Sovereign Design Play Systems.
“They came up with the suggestion of, rather than siting it in one area, site it in various areas of the park, because there are quite a few walks around the park,” he said.
Councillor Otter said he hoped that if the scheme was approved, with the funding, it could be completed within six months.
