A Leyland reveller was left fighting for his life after being stabbed while holidaying on Spanish party island Ibiza.

Popular Jamie French, 21 – known to his family and friends as Jay – suffered a punctured lung after being attacked with a broken glass bottle in the resort of Playa den Bossa.

The venue is a 10-minute drive from the island’s capital Ibiza town.

Jamie’s face was slashed and he injured his hand in the fracas, which reportedly involved up to a dozen Brits.

There are reports that he was stabbed after a dispute next to a public pool but this has not been confirmed.

The former Leyland St Mary’s Catholic Technology College pupil was rushed to hospital in a critical condition, and his parents flew out to be at his bedside after they learnt the devastating news.

He is now out of intensive care but still battling back from his injuries.

Mr French’s brother Luke, who runs the family delicatessen, Chicken Barbecue, in Hough Lane, with Jay, said on Tuesday: “He’s getting better and that’s the main thing.

“My mum and dad are staying there with him.”

Speaking last week after the story first broke Luke said it had left the family devastated.

“We have all been heartbroken all weekend, but he is alive and that is the most important thing,” he said. “He had been on a lads’ holiday with his friends and he was stabbed in his side with a broken glass bottle.

“He was also cut on his face and something has happened to his thumb as well.

“His friend rang my mum and dad to tell them what had happened and that he was in hospital and we just couldn’t believe it.

“It has been an horrible weekend for all of us, but he is out of intensive care now and my mum and dad have flown out to Ibiza to be with him.”

Luke said it is the third time that Jay has visited the island and he had been staying at the Ibiza Rocks Hotel.

He added: “He had only gone for five days and was due to fly home on Tuesday night.

“We don’t know any details of what exactly happened, but he is a really good lad and it seems he was in the wrong place at the wrong time.

“He is a great guy, a blast and is always the life and soul of the party. We just want him home safe now.”

Jay, who lives in Lancaster Lane, was transferred from intensive care on Monday after suffering a punctured lung, but he will need more tests before it is known when he will be allowed to fly home.

“We don’t have any idea when he’ll be able to come back,” Luke added. “The good thing is that mum and dad are there with him and his friends have been really supportive and have been going to visit him in hospital.

“Nothing like this has happened before and we’re just glad that he is recovering.”

Four people are due to appear in court in Ibiza in connection with the incident.

A Leyland friend, who asked not to be named, said: “There are all sorts of reports doing the rounds about what happened.

“Jay was just in the wrong place at the wrong time. He’s a smashing lad.”

There are reports that a 22-year-old man was also hurt although the extent of his injuries are not known.

The incident happened on July 29.
