A supermarket chain has finally broken its silence over plans to build a new store in Leyland town centre.
As reported in the Guardian recently, work has now started at the old petrol station site on the corner of Canberra Road and Turpin Green Lane.
Tesco is planning to build an Express store there, and initially said work was set to be completed earlier this year.
The supermarket giant came under fire after leaving the plot empty for so long, and it has now been revealed that the scheme has been put back a year.
Mark Thomas said “We’re looking forward to opening our new store in Leyland.
“We’re sorry it has taken longer than expected to work through the detail needed to get started, but now we are on-site at the corner of Canberra Road and Turpin Green Lane.
“We expect the store to open its doors to customers in spring 2014, and we are determined to be a good neighbour to the local community through construction and onwards.”
Residents in the area objected to the plans when they were submitted to South Ribble Council in June last year.
