A unique venture which uses graffiti and music to keep youngsters off the streets needs someone with a fresh perspective to take it on.

Kris Johnson set up Step Into Music at the Earnshaw Business Centre in Leyland in October 2012, and holds workshops for children and teens.

And although the business has been a success, Kris thinks it’s time someone new took on the challenge.

“When I started Step Into Music, I was working full-time,” he said. “I do part-time now so I can focus more on the business, but really it needs someone, or a team of people, who can give their commitment to it full time.

“I want to make sure it goes into the right hands.

“I think there are still a lot of opportunities for the business, because some people still don’t even know it’s there.

“It will need someone with a bit of cash behind them, but I also think there’s more scope to get funding too.

“It would be a real shame to see it go, because it’s fantastic.”

Facilities at the site include a recording studio and graffiti garden.

Kris, a former Balshaw’s CE High School pupil who still lives in Leyland, is employed as a substance misuse worker by Blackpool Council and works with young people.

He saw Step Into Music as a good way to help youths stay out of trouble and find a creative outlet, and holds workshops with school groups.

“We also do therapeutic workshops,” he added. “We have links with mental health services and Barnardo’s, and we have an after-school programme.

“I wanted to create interactive, fun sessions, so these kids weren’t stuck in their bedrooms watching clips on YouTube trying to learn to play a musical instrument.

“We also have graffiti parties where youths can spray paint the walls and take photos of their work.

“It’s all been really popular, but I really think there’s someone out there who can see its potential and take it forward.”

Kris’s lease runs out in February, so he has until then to find a potential buyer for his business.
