A man died after being struck by a train on the West Coast mainline south of Preston early today.
The incident closed the busy rail route for almost three hours between Preston and Wigan, causing long delays for passengers.
The man’s body was found at around 6.30am on the track near to Coppull.
A British Transport Police spokesman said the death was not thought to be suspicious.
“We were called at around 6.30 by reports that a person had been struck by a train and killed near to Coppull,” said the spokesman.
“Our officers, together with ambulance services and Lancashire Police attended the scene.
“The incident is not being treated as suspicious at this stage. We are in the process of trying to identify the deceased and notify his family.
“Once we have done that a report will be passed to the coroner.”
The main line was shut down in both directions from 6.30 until around 9.15am.
