Friends of 15-year-old Rebecca Smith gathered to pay tribute to the schoolgirl who was killed in a crash.

They set off dozens of lanterns from the field near Mercer Street which lit up the skies across Lostock Hall on Saturday night.

Rebecca, known as Beckii to her friends, died after she was in collision with a car on the dual carriageway on London Road, near the Capitol Centre, at around 9.50pm on Sunday, September 18.

Her friends, many from Lostock Hall Academy, where Rebecca was a Year 11 pupil, shared happy memories as they released lanterns.

Jamie Roe, 17, of Bamber Bridge, said: “Beckii was a very close friend of mine and is being unbelievably missed by people whose lives she made utterly special. She was happy and down to earth.

“There was a caring atmosphere where everybody was helping each other out. She would probably have thought the world of it.”

Rebecca’s best friend Abbie Culshaw, 15, from Bamber Bridge, set off lanterns with a group of friends on the bridge near to where she died.

Abbie said: “I think she would’ve loved it.

“She was an amazing person. She never had a bad thing to say about anyone. She was always smiling.”
