A Leyland man battling a brain tumour has had the chance to sail with round-the-world yachtswoman Dame Ellen MacArthur.
Ross Tomlinson, 20, who lives in Church Road, has helped raise thousands of pounds for The Young Oncology Unit at the Christie Hospital in Manchester, where he’s being treated.
He’s now the inspiration for a major fundraising campaign by Chorley Building Society, where his mum Linda works.
The latest scans show that three per cent of the cancer remains in Ross’ bone marrow and he’s currently on a maintenance chemotherapy programme.
He was picked for the trip-of-a-lifetime with The Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust. which aims to inspire young people’s cancer recovery through sailing.
Ross took part in the Trust’s four-day yacht adventure for 18-25 years olds, along with 22 other young people from across the country, who are all in recovery from cancer and leukemia.
They took charge of four yachts in and around the Solent waters off the Isle of Wight earlier this month.
Ross was joined by five other young people on board their boat, Scarlet Oyster. The former Balshaw’s High School pupil, said: “It was a brilliant trip. We learnt loads about sailing, all the knots, how to tack, how to put the sails up and down, it was great.
“We all had a go at steering the boat, it was good fun. The ribs were really good bouncing around, I would love to do it again! ”
The Trust was launched in 2003 by Dame Ellen MacArthur and takes young people in recovery from cancer and leukaemia sailing onboard 38-48 foot cruising yachts.
The trips provide a unique experience for the young people, where they get the chance to test themselves in a safe and supportive environment.
Trust Patron, Dame Ellen MacArthur, said: “This is a group which is often over looked in terms of care, with many young people treated on adult wards.
“We have wanted to work with young people of this age for a long time and in 2010 we ran our first yacht trip for young adults. It is fantastic to be able to offer this opportunity to even more young adults this year.”
