Police have closed a Preston park after discovering what is believed to be a potentially ‘live and very dangerous’ bomb.

Forces are on site in a field opposite Avenham Park where an old three inch HE military mortar has been found by two people with a metal detector.

The military has been contacted and people are advised to avoid the area.

Police have announced plans to carry out a ‘controlled explosion’, and the 100m cordon has been expanded around the area to ensure people’s safety.

Sgt Paul McLarnon said: “It looks like the bomb has been there for some time, and there is some corrosion on it.

“We are treating it as live and very dangerous.

“Two people were using a metal detector and got a signal from the metal from the ground.

“They exposed the item and did the right thing by calling us immediately.”

There is currently no access to Avenham Park from South Ribble via the tram bridges, and no access along the riverbank at Avenham Park.
