Leyland United booked a place in the Challenge Cup semi-final after a battling victory over Todmorden Borough.

Goals from Ryan Greenwood and Matt Ferguson sealed a fine victory for United.

Todmorden starting strongly using the slope to their advantage and causing the Leyland back-line plenty of problems.

The home side grew into the game but the opening 25 minutes proved to be very scrappy with neither goalkeeper having a real save to make.

It was just after the

half-hour mark Leyland had their first meaningfullattack.

Ashley Ball put in a pinpoint cross for Greenwood but the latter could only head tamely towards goal.

The rest of the half saw little goalmouth action with both sides struggling to gain a real foothold in the game.

The second half started much like the first – very scrappy with both sides surrendering possession too cheaply.

Then just prior to the hour mark and after a succession of corner kicks, the Todmorden defence was finally breached.

A ball was sent into the penalty area which landed perfectly at the feet of Greenwood and he made no mistake finishing past the goalkeeper.

Seven minutes later the lead was doubled.

Martin Savager whipped in a free-kick and Ferguson swept the ball in from six yards.

Ball then had two chances to extend the Leyland lead but he failed to beat the keeper on one and then missed the target on another.

Sub Jack Monks missed a chance late on but Leyland held on and sealed a battling performance.

n Charnock Richard have well and truly put their 2014 blip behind them as they made light work of Tempest United.

Mark Woods, a double from David Burrows and a Mike Fletcher strike sealed a fine 4-0 victory.

The Mossie Park outfit started strongly with Dave Fisher striking over the bar from outside the penalty area while Carl Grimshaw struck another effort across goal.

After 12 minutes, Charnock took the lead when Woods turned two defenders on the edge of the 18-yard box and sent an unstoppable shot in the bottom corner.

Ross Bain and Burrows then had chances to double the lead and just after the half-hour mark, Burrows did just that by burying a header past the goalkeeper.

Burrows then grabbed his second goal just after the break after linking up well with Grimshaw.

Tempest sub Danny Ashcroft kept Gavin Bates on his toes as he sent an effort just over the bar.

The visitors pressed on and saw two efforts just go wide of the goal.

Sub Danial Hogg then rattled the Tempest bar following a Grimshaw through ball.

Tempest finished the game strongly but it was Fletcher who brought the game to an end.

He rose above everyone to bag the fourth with a bullet header.
