Makinson’s wickets pave the way

Leyland advanced into the next round of the Readers Cup securing an eight-wicket victory over big-spenders Penrith.

Leyland skittled their opponents for just 122 inside the allocated overs.

The wickets were shared amongst the team with Andrew Makinson being the pick of the bowlers taking 3-27 off seven overs.

Karl Cross (1-13), Luis Reece (1-17), David Makinson (1-24), Jake Peake (1-0) and Steven Pallett (2-27) were the other wicket takers for the Fox Lane outfit.

In reply, Reece hit 43 off 55 balls and Alex Ross hit 22 off just 16 balls but the pair then fell in quick succession.

It was left to Danny Lamb (32*) and Chris Parkinson (11*) to guide Leyland to victory inside 25 overs.

n Second-team skipper Ian Farrington’s brilliant century ensured Leyland would be advancing into the next round of the second team cup, also at the expense of Penrith.

Farrington’s century came off just 77 balls including 14 fours and three sixes as his side posted a massive 321-3 off 40 overs.

Farrington was ably supported by Hamza Khan (30), Tom Reece (59) along with unbeaten scores from Sam Oldham (57) and James Rounding (24).

Penrith were never in the game in their chase as Leyland bowled tightly and with quality throughout the innings.

Will Jacques took 2-6 off five overs and he was one of seven bowlers used by


Youngster Oldham again showed his qualities taking 4-10 off six overs with young leg-spinner Alex Williams taking 1-23.

Mark Osborne offered some resistance hitting an 52 and Neil Atkinson hit 16.

But Penrith still closed on only 115-8, well short of their target.
