Membership of Leyland Golf Club is a privileged position as the season draws to a close at the Wigan Road Club.

The club has had to post a ‘full’ sign on its doors having reached its target of 630 members in 2014.

Membership chairman Frank McMahon said: “I am extremely proud of how my committee has worked together to achieve this feat and everyone has played their part seamlessly to achieve this record.

“The club’s excellent financial standing is in no small part to the membership team achieving the targets we were set by club chairman Norman Graham at the beginning of the year, and our planning and strategies have proved successful.

“However, we know we will be back to square one as we always lose around 60 members every year.”

For the first time, the club now has a waiting list.

But its doors will open again on October 1 when it will offer 15 months’ membership for the price of 12, which has successfully recruiting members before.

McMahon is also delighted with the success of the Academy, which has been sponsored by Waitrose in 2014.

“We now have 26 members out of a capacity of 30.

“The Academy is for all ages and sexes to try their hand at the game with free lessons, free rounds and a social membership included in the package.

“It’s a great way to try the game before committing to a full year’s subscription.

“On average, four people a month are joining and many feed into full membership after a short period.”

The club has also had tremendous success this year in winning the Preston & District Golf League and the Charity Cup, which involves Preston & District clubs.

Even the catering side at the club is almost full, with the Greenery Function Room all but booked up for Slater’s Christmas Party nights.

Caterer Vince Slater said: “We are almost booked solid over Christmas and only have vacancies on December 18.”
