Young Oliver Grindrod is playing the lead role in his famous namesake’s play next month.

Leyland’s St Ambrose Players are staging the ever-popular musical, Oliver! from Tuesday, May 13, to Saturday, May 17, at 7.30pm in St Ambrose Church Hall, Moss Lane.

Member Sarah White said: “Rehearsals are going really well and needless to say all the cast are having a lot of fun with this fabulous musical.

“We last performed the show to wide acclaim back in 2001 and we’re delighted that several cast members are reprising their roles including John Sangster who plays a marvellous Fagin, Steven Barnes as the wonderfully creepy undertaker Mr Sowerberry and David White as the kindly Mr Brownlow.

“We’re also delighted that the rest of our cast is equally strong with some very accomplished actors and singers taking to the stage to create these iconic roles.

“There’s many familiar faces along with some new, in particular Oliver Grindrod who plays the title role of Oliver in his first production with us and it’s fair to say he has melted all our hearts!”

She added: “The set is looking fantastic and we owe a lot to our very talented stage crew who have built two magnificent staircases and a bridge in addition to designing interior scenes and painting a fantastic view of Victorian London.”

In a new move for St Ambrose Players, the company has joined forces with Grandad Jim’s Traditional Sweet Shoppe on Chapel Brow, Leyland, which is now selling tickets for the show.

Andy Dickinson, who runs the popular sweet shop, regularly sets up treat stalls during the interval of the Players’ performances, and is now supporting the group further by selling tickets at his shop.

Tickets cost £9.50, £7.50 concessions (OAP concessions Tuesday and Saturday) and are available now.
