I haven’t had corned beef hash for years – and even then I never tried it inside a giant Yorkshire pudding.

It seemed like an odd combination to me, but I like both meals separately, so decided to give it a shot.

I was at Avant Garden Centre in Leyland – another new venture for me as I’ve never eaten at a garden centre before.

Maybe a coffee and a cake, but it’s not the type of place I’d normally choose for a full meal.

It was Sunday afternoon though, and my boyfriend and I fancied grabbing a bite to eat as we wandered round the shop.

The restaurant itself is really lovely – much like the rest of the centre – with paintings by local artists adding colourful character to the walls.

It’s called the Café Gallery, and there are also handmade cards and jewellery and other decorative pieces lined around the room, bringing the arty feel of the shopping space into the eating area.

It was a really nice touch, and the items are also for sale, so browsing through the goods is a good way to pass time whilst you wait for food.

Not that we had much of a wait – our starters and drinks came within about five minutes.

I’d chosen the pâté on toast which came with soft butter (which melted straight into the toast), a tasty chutney and a side salad.

The pâté itself was quite sweet and different to what I’ve tried in the past, but very enjoyable and complimented the chutney well.

Jack had the homemade soup of the day (tomato) which was served with a crusty roll and butter, and he really enjoyed that too.

I had a mocha to drink, which was the best I’ve ever had – a good, warming combination of chocolate and coffee as the rain drizzled onto the windows outside.

There are plenty of lunch options such as sandwiches, salads, paninis, jacket potatoes and an all-day breakfast.

There’s also a ‘build your own breakfast’ option for before noon, which sounds good.

The main courses include roast beef dinner, fish and chips, gammon, sausage and mash, and chicken burger with chips.

I pondered the specials board and bravely decided to go for the corned beef hash served in the giant Yorkshire pudding.

It was actually delicious - nice and moist and full of chunky veg like potatoes and carrot. It came with beetroot and the Yorkshire pudding was quite shallow, so it wasn’t overbearing.

Jack had something less substantial in my opinion – homemade quiche served with salad and new potatoes.

He said it was good but that the quiche was a bit plain and could have done with a few more ingredients.

We both fancied a dessert but were far too full, so we may have to go back sometime soon for a coffee and cake combo (well, it’ll be another mocha for me. That was the star of the show.)

One pudding which caught my eye was pear drop flavoured ice cream.

Sounds unusual, but so did my main course, and that turned out to be a winner.

The bill came to £26.
